Sep- 08 The Environment Agency and Hydro-Logic have started a joint research and development project to evaluate the performance of the Vaisala Raincap rainfall intensity gauge which forms part of the WXT520 Weather Transmitter.  The Raincap sensor could prove to be a lower maintenance alternative to tipping-bucket raingauges, which would reduce the frequency of site visits carried out by Environment Agency staff. A network of 10 Raincap gauges have been installed in the Midlands Region, all of which have been linked to Isodaq’s Hawk XT GSM outstation via the unit’s SDI12 smart sensor port. Hydro-Logic will collect the data using their own telemetry servers and the Environment Agency will analyse the data collected over a one year period and compare the results against tipping-bucket and storage check gauges which are curently used at existing rainfall monitoring sites.
